Just as much time goes into creating the villains of comics
as the heroes, and many of them are so recurring they could have their own
comic books. IGN Entertainment once listed the top 100 comic book villains of
all time, and I’m going to tell you about the top 3. This list was based on
overall villain-ness as well as powers and backstories. Number 3 on the list
was Dr. Doom, number 2 was the Joker, and the number one villain of all time is
Magneto.
Dr. Doom is a villain of the Fantastic Four comics. Victor Von Doom (with a
name like that he didn’t have many options other than supervillain) was raised
by gypsies, and through the use of a magical artifact, learned to cast spells.
He went to the same university as Mr. Fantastic, but rejected his offer of
friendship. Doom then travelled to the small country of Latveria, where he
conquered them and became their ruler. Doom is now the totalitarian leader of
the country, which is actually flourishing financially and technologically,
even though his rule is quite harsh. Doom is encased in powerful metal armour,
and is capable of doing all sorts of things with his magic (blasting people,
moving objects, flying, etc.) Ultimately though, the fact that he is a mastermind
when it comes to his ability to concoct schemes is what has allowed him to
steal Silver Surfer’s Cosmic Surfboard, the Fantastic Four’s headquarters, as
well as dominate the entire world through mind control. He is devious and
greedy.
The Joker is one of a small group of super villains that are believed to be
100% insane. Though other villains clearly have something wrong with them that
they can do the things they do, Joker is so off the wall that there is little
doubt that he’s literally, clinically crazy. Joker has genius level intellect,
indomitable will, some skill in hand-to-hand combat, and a large arsenal of
comedic gadgets he commits crimes with. His classic weapon is laughing gas,
which leaves a twisted grin on his victims’ faces. Joker causes incredible
amounts of chaos and destruction, often employing other villains to partake in
his plans. He has broken out of prison countless times, as well as broken out
every other inmate. Joker is extremely violent, being the one who killed
Batman’s younger sidekick Robin in a very brutal fashion. He is fortunate that
Batman is his nemesis, as Batman never kills his enemies (ok, there have been
some exceptions, but mostly early year comics, and accidents). Because of this
Joker continues to haunt Gotham City in a multitude of ways, even after being
captured. There is no predicting what Joker is going to do, though you can
always be certain it is evil.
The number one greatest villain is Magneto. He is a villain that believes
mutants are better than humans, and works to eradicate humans from the world.
He masterminds plans that are world affecting, and his power allows him
incredible levels of control on his environment. Some of the most creative uses
of his metal manipulation have been in the movies, where he has stopped
vehicles in their path, drawn metal from someone’s body, and cause himself to
fly by moving his metal boots. In the comics, Magneto has even removed all the
adamantium from Wolverine’s skeleton! Magneto is charismatic, and draws many
powerful mutants to his cause. He has even worked with the X-Men on occasions
where it has benefited him or mutantkind as a whole, which makes him seem not
all bad at all times. His backstory is sad, having survived a concentration
camp and Nazi experiments, Magneto is likened to other powerful charismatic men
throughout history, and strikes a particular chord of fear in people who
recognize what he stands for.
