Superhero Fact #8

Not all superheroes are created equal. Throughout the many years of Marvel and DC publishing comics, there have been some heroes with very strange, or useless seeming powers. Though there are many, here is a little bit about three of them.
Jubilee is an X-Man with the mutant ability to create bursts of coloured light from her hands. This means that on a team including a guy with eye beams, someone controlling all forms of weather, and a regenerating knife master, she can make some harmless fireworks. As she was written into more and more comics, writers found her so useless they began to “evolve” her powers so she can now use them to smash objects. For the most part though, Jubilee was there to dazzle the enemy.
Blue Beetle is a hero with intellect and gadgetry that rivals even Batman in its complexity. However, Blue Beetle wields the strangest weapon, the Beetle Gun. This gun creates bursts of light and compressed air that is used to disorient and knock enemies over. Blue Beetle looks like he could be such an effective crime fighter, if his gun didn’t sound like some sort of toy.
Cypher is a strange character; his ability is to understand any language intuitively. While this means he’s an awesome translator in a world with many alien races, it’s when he starts to use it “in the field” that it really seems the writers were grasping at straws. In hand-to-hand combat, Cypher can “read someone’s body language” to anticipate and respond to their attacks. He has also “read” the structural make-up of a building in order to know how to bring it down. I don’t really know if those things should count…
